Promise Ntuen Ekeminim a Nigerian who hacked the email account of an Australian and attempted to sell off his real estate property on the Internet is now serving a one-year jail term, according to Nigeria’s anti-graft agency.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the Nigerian fraudster Ekemini has been sentenced by Justice Kudirat Jose of the Lagos High Court in Lagos.
Ekemini was sentenced to one year imprisonment for hijacking the e-mail of a lawful owner of a property, located in Western Australia valued at $800,000 and attempted to sell the property, according to EFCC.
The agency says it was alerted of the fraudulent activity of Ekemini by the Australian Police.
The fraudster courted trouble by impersonating Brian Roderick Daniel, owner of a property located at No. 143, Sprinaway Parade, Falcon, Western Australia and offering the his property to buyers on the Internet without the consent of the owner, EFCC says.
He was arraigned in April, 2014 on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy to defraud, attempt to obtain money by false pretences and forgery.
Justice Jose found him guilty of all the charges and convicted him and his sentence is to run from the day of his arraignment.
The Australian Police, which alerted the EFCC on the activity of the fraudster asked the Nigerian anti-graft agency to monitor a controlled delivery of some documents related to the transactions to Ekemini. He was arrested at the point of collection of the documents, according to EFCC.
