The website of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has been voted the top website among Federal Government agencies in Nigeria, winning three major awards in the 2015 Web-Jurist awards.
The NBC website won the 2015 Web-Jurist awards’ Best Overall Website Award after being adjudged the Best Web Accessibility Award and the Best Web Aesthetics Award.
At a short presentation ceremony in Lagos on Thursday, the Chairman of Phillip Consulting, Nigeria, the initiators of the web-jurist Award project, Mr Foluso Phillips, announced that the objective of the Web-Jurist’s Award was to critically and objectively evaluate the effectiveness of websites.
Phillips said the process of evaluation was a critical analysis of each website, step-by-step using detailed criteria developed specifically for the evaluation of the effectiveness and performance of a website.
Mr. Seun Ngonnase, Associate Partner at Phillip Consulting, explains further that a critical exploration of the websites of Federal Government parastatals in Nigeria showed that the NBC website had the best accessibility features, such as each of opening and ease of navigation between pages and links, which won it the Best Accessibility trophy.
According to Phillip Consulting, the clarity of pictures and images, and the suitability and uniformity of fonts used in the website as well as the overall arrangement of the pages gave the NBC website the best outlook among the websites of Federal Government parastatals.
Presenting the trophies, the Chairman Phillips Consulting, Phillips said winning those two major categories also qualified the NBC website to win the best overall website award.
Receiving the trophies, the Director General, National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Emeka Mba, thanked the Web-Jurist for the recognitions. He also thanked his team in the Commission, especially the Director Public Affairs, Mr. Awwalu Salihu and the external consultant Mr. John Adebowale, who worked on the website.
According to the D-G of NBC, the website is still work in progress and promised that the broadcast industry regulator will maintain the momentum of hard work.
Mba add that the NBC believes that as it works towards the digital transition, the website should be a little bit more than a window, “but a fulcrum of our activities, getting a lot of our job done through the website.”
The NBC D-G then thanked Phillips Consulting for putting together th award as a significant contribution to preparing the Nigerian public sector and indeed the whole of the country to fit into the 21st century.
The second best website among parastatals for 2015, is that of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, with the Federal Road Safety Commission coming third.
The Web-Jurist rating of websites began an annual award in 2001 with financial, telecommunications and media institutions, and is inaugurating the assessment of public sector websites this year, which Mr Phillips declared as a game changer.
According to him, this would further drive the development of fully integrated and interactive websites for Nigerian public sector institutions to encourage public participation in their decision-making processes.
